On my continued absence

Hello all-

You might have noticed that daily updates haven’t happened for a while now. I haven’t abandoned this blog or my quest to conquer Dummit and Foote; rather, I’ve spent the last month and a half working furiously on my dissertation. I have my sights set on graduating this summer, which means that some of my other activities (like the Crazy Project or a regular sleep schedule) are on hold until I finish.

I will be back to work here “soon”. 🙂

I’m back

Hello all.

For the last several weeks I’ve ignored this site completely, instead focusing on writing and looking after my family. (The posts that were published during this time were written months ago.) I’ll start paying it a little more attention now, beginning with the 50 unanswered messages in my inbox (!) though it may take me a while to get caught up.

Thank you all for reading, and especially for taking time to point out errors.

Some changes

Hello all.

I’ve been updating this blog every day for about a year and a half now, and it’s been incredibly rewarding. The habit of producing something every day, even something small, has reaped huge benefits. It also requires a huge commitment of time. Time well spent, I think, but time nonetheless, and I am now at a point in my life where that time is better spent on other things. Specifically, I have to finish my dissertation!

I’m not quitting altogether or shutting this thing down, but updates will be coming much more slowly for a while.

Irrelevant ads are irrelevant.

Hello.

I was testing my backup script today and noticed that if you browse this blog while not logged in to WordPress, every post is accompanied by hideous and irrelevant advertisements. These are automatically added by WordPress. I have nothing to do with them and find them to be incredibly obnoxious.

Now I can’t complain too much about this, since after all WordPress.com is providing this platform to broadcast my garbled rantings for free. I do think these particular ads are tacky and detract from the usefulness of the site, though. If I were going to put ads up here on purpose (which I have no intention of doing for the foreseeable future) they would be unobtrusive and only for relevant things I actually use and enjoy myself- like good books and tools, for instance. Certainly not this PopPressed crap.

There are a couple of ways to remove these, most of which are inaccessible because they cost money. At the moment it appears that the easiest (and cheapest) way to view this site without the tacky ads is to get a WordPress account (which is free) and log in.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

It’s all back

Alright- all of the old posts are back up as of about 20 minutes ago. I’m sure I introduced some broken or misdirected links along the way. If you see one, let me know.

Now my effort here will focus on posting new problems.

Thanks for reading!

Update

Hello all.

I just realized that the current front-page post doesn’t really make sense anymore.

The exercises are slowly coming back up- as of right now just over half are back. Before republishing I am giving each example/theorem a descriptive title and updating any backreferences. I’ve also started tagging each post with relevant descriptors. This might have caused you some frustration, but I hope that in the long run this will make the archive more useful.

My goal for now is to get all of the existing posts back up, and then resume working through examples and proofs.

Thanks for reading!

Algebra Discussion Fun Time

While I’m figuring out how to reintroduce actual content to the blog, this post is a place for asking and answering questions and maybe even general (algebra-related) discussions. Like a poor-man’s forum. Anybody is welcome to join in.

All I ask is that everyone be kind- we all just want to learn. (I will be moderating comments, but only to make sure I don’t miss any and to catch spam.)

ready….
